Welcome to the space
(Since June 22, 2024, Space has ceased to be just a site - now it is a set of tools, processes and principles that help me work)
Hello! In this post I talk about the problem of centralization, why I am creating not a simple blog, but Space and how it should help me remember, think and create.
Web was designed to connect people and documents. For a while it was like that - a nice, cozy place where everyone had (potentially could have) a corner with their own rules and style. For example, my friends and I had blogs on LiveJournal and Wordpress, I went to someone’s server or computer via FTP to download a document, and in the evening I listened to home Internet radio (if I’m not mistaken, from Denis Vasilkov there was once an evening “warm tube” radio).
Today everything has changed (and continues to change, unfortunately). Nice cozy corners have turned into huge, noisy “squares” with constantly changing policies, total surveillance and even paid access .
I feel nostalgic for the times when we ruled the web. But I have the strength and capabilities to regain my “corner of the Internet.”
Welcome to my space !
The blog is not enough for me because I know its shortcomings. It is important that this is precisely the space for thoughts, ideas, reactions and my voice. Now the Space consists of blocks (modules):
- Blog
- Notes
- Index Notes
- Literary notes
- Daily and weekly notes (hidden)
- Canvases (hidden)
- Memory system with repetition interval (SRS)
- Podcast
- Photos
- Movies
- Design
- Music
These are the main modules. In the future, something will definitely be added, “fall off” or transformed. At the start, I need a system in which the elements are as balanced as possible and together create space for fixation, development and distribution.
Basic modules
Blog is a place for quickly recording thoughts and observations. Each publication here is time-bound and is an attempt to capture a moment. For example, today some brilliant (or terrible) idea came into my head, I watched, read or visited something and I want to share my emotions and record the main points. A blog is a stream of facts, thoughts and emotions.
Notes allow you to record, accumulate and gradually develop ideas. I don’t like the concept of a “second brain” - we have one brain and it is enough. Space is an assistant that regularly confronts me with my ideas in order to come up with new things and create something new, because memory is necessary for creativity.
The spaced repetition memory system helps to gradually develop ideas and remember, and by training memory, we set up routing to solve problems.
Without Borders
The main language is Russian, but I am pleased to have the potential to be understood by as many people as possible - I semi-automatically translate some notes into English and can add other languages without any problems.
First of all for yourself
I don’t need to appear, because I create space first of all for myself. Sometimes I want to share something ready-made, and sometimes I want to show the beginning, the process of growth and development, or the death of a thought.
My rules and policies apply here. I don’t care whether you like something here or not - you came to visit me, but I’m glad to see you.
Post here, post everywhere (POSSE)
Knowledge must accumulate and it is very important to me that I own my product and control the distribution. I use the approach publish on your site, post everywhere (POSSE). Any platform can close or change the rules, but I will not lose my product and audience.
Here’s what I wrote recently in Mastodon:
Social networks are just networks. Not storage.
Comments and community
There are no public comments under notes here. First of all, this is due to technical limitations. the site is static, it also requires compliance with the GDPR policies. But restrictions help - under almost every note there is a link, by clicking on which you can write me a letter. It is more personal, sincere, requires effort and weeds out random ones.
What now?
While space may resemble an apartment during renovation - here there are still wires sticking out of the wall instead of an outlet, here the floor is dirty, here there is no plumbing or electricity connected yet.
- Something is not completed
- Somewhere I encountered resistance (I think)
- Somewhere I got bored and I quit for now
- Something may not work
- Links may not open
- Pictures for social networks may not be cropped correctly -…
It is important that incompleteness is the principle of space .
